I am in the process of restoring a WD-9. They are a big ole brute, think of it as the 425 hp 4wd of today without all of the electrical and hydrualic help for the operator. They aren't very user-friendly but I don't think that is your major concern. They are however rather rare in some parts of the country and a good conversation piece for the nosy neighbors!
I have had no engine problems other than injectors, but as the other guys mentioned they are prone to some problems.
My main problem has been a rear main seal... it took a great deal of work to get to it, nothing major just time, some knowledge and patience would have came in handy.
