For what it is worth, I solved a similar problem with a 300U. My option was to use muratic acid (available at pool supply houses, etc). It is nasty stuff but the rust was bad and I couldn't afford the time or money to take the engine down to bare block for a caustic dip. So I brought the caustic dip to it. I removed the radiator and water pump and blocked those holes with stoppers. I knew I was going to buy a new water jacket cover so I just painted the old one with epoxy to resist the acid and re-installed it. I added a pipe elbow where the temperature element goes as a fill hole and I added a small plastic valve at the block drain below the water jacket. I added one gallon of straight muratic acid and filled the rest with water. The biggest problem was to figure out how long to leave it in. I went for an hour first then drained it into a plastic bucket observing the flow. I removed the water cover, wire brushed, inspected and repeated the process, adding the same acid (less the junk that was already flushed). I left it in about 3 hours and I was very happy with the result. I flushed clear water through for a long time then added a solution of water and baking soda to stabilize the PH of any remaining acid. Please be aware that although muratic acid is sold to average home owners everywhere, it is dangerous stuff. I also remind you that a little rust won't hurt an engine nearly as bad as a water jacket thinned out by acid. My experience worked great but yours may differ. Good Luck
