There is a screen in the reservoir under the seat. It isn't accessible unless you remove the reservoir top, so you have to drain the hydraulic fluid. The power steering uses the same pump as the hydraulics, it could be that your flud level is low and the pump is slow to prime. You might also have a leak in the line from the reservoir to the pump that is letting air into the line, which will cause the pump to lose prime. Hy-Tran is the correct fluid. The steering gearbox, however, uses 90W gear oil.
