I just finished rebuilding the cylinders on my T-340, and on two of the five cylinders the "hook" end of the retaining ring was missing. Actually it's not really a hook - it's just a 90 degree bend, 3/16" long or so, that seats in the cap. Is the ring is sticking to the cap, or is it sticking to the cylinder? If it's sticking the cap, you can just turn the cap to expose an end of the ring to pry up and grip. If the ring is sticking to the cylinder, things are a little more difficult. You need to somehow rotate the ring enough to grip it and then thread it out thru the slot in the cylinder. I was able to do this by driving the the unbroken end of the ring with a small punch. You might want to carefully try this - keep in mind all the parts are fairly soft and easily damaged. If the ring is really stuck, rusted, etc., I imagine things could become interesting because it will be "hidden" and completely inaccessible. You might have to elongate the slot in the cylinder to access the ring.
