You can stick a 12 volt regulator on a 6 volt generator and get 12 volts. This is because a generator acts as a "current source" (not a "voltage source"), and is capable of delivering current at a terminal voltage of 20 - 25 volts or so. However a 6 volt generator running on 12 volts will tend to run hot under full-field (i.e. heavy load) conditions. This is because 12 volts doubles the design current flowing in the field windings, which in turn QUADRUPLES the heat dissipated in windings (P = I^2 * R). Bottom line is a 6 volt generator will work on 12 volts, but depending on the application may not last for long. A true conversion of a generator from 6 to 12 volts involves rewinding the field coils with smaller, higher resistance wire to keep the field current (hence heat dissipation) within design limits. Regarding alternators that will fit under the hood of a "M", there's room up there for most any standard automotive alternator. Only certain older, "high output" (usually 70 amps and above) units, and the older Chrysler externally finned alternators are too big to fit.
