Prune Picker, my mechanic recommends 140 in place of 90 wt. in old tractors, etc. here in eastern NC. He says (this is his opinion) that today's 90 wt. gear oil is thinner than it used to be. (He says more like 30 wt. motor oil) He feels that 140 wt. gives better gear cushion and lubrication, particularly in transmissions and rear ends that have some wear, as you found out with your JD when you switched. When he overhauled my Super A engine he changed all the fluids and used 140. I think it did quiet it down some. I would say go for it. Al
