Nat, the magneto ignition has a coil inside it. The mag works basically like a Briggs lawn mower. Picture the coil, points and magnet inside the magneto, unlike a distributor which has the coil on the outside and needs power to the + terminal to make it fire (remember no battery on the briggs push mower). It is not common, but if the coil on the magnito fails, some folks have put an external coil on the tractor and wired it up to the original mag. Sounds like you might have it wired right, power to the + end of coil, and - from the coil to the mag. Best way to check is to pull a plug and stick it in the spark plug wire and lay it aginst the steel block. Crank the engine and look for spark. Remember there are points inside and they may be cruddy. Might have to pull the mag cover and clean point. Dont move the little gears, they have to be timed right. Watch how it comes apart.
