SUPER C CHARGING WOES

6 volt system on the super c only charges intermittently, and if you turn on the lights, it automatically discharges the system, any ideas? (it has been a long dark winter) Once, the battery went dead and I put it on the charger for a short time and possibly had + and - reversed, could this have done bad things to the charging system? Or do you think that the brushes are just worn out on the generator?
