300U Info

I'm going to check out a 300U with loader this afternoon. I've already learned from this board that the TA and front steering can be problems, but I have a few further questions. How do I check the TA? Just make sure it engages and doesn't pop out, or is there more to it? Owner says he changed the hydraulic pump and still has problems. Thinks its a control valve. Sound right? Also, the previous owner disconnected the power steering when the pump was bad. If the steering is tight without power, will it be OK with power? Are there any other flaws I should look for? Thanks in advance for the help.
