The casting code is used primarily to identify the part. As I understand it, the letter part of some castings is a date code. It would not be unusual for M's from several different years to have parts with the same casting code, as the foundry would do a "run" of castings that might last for several years of production. If no design changes were made to the casting, they would just use them until they ran out, and then cast another run.
