The first H tractors were shipped with the 1 1/8" pto as standard. This pto actually was flush with the back of the tractor bull gear housing, and the shifter was a chronic problem. At this time-1939 etc, I do not think the pto standards were established as yet. IH made a retro kit available for the early H tractor because of the function problem, and that pto at 13/8" extended out the back of the housing about 6". The shifter was in the housing of the pto on this design. Along with this kit you got a flat plate about 12" long to bolt on to the fixed drawbar to make the pto conform to the then established dimensions. The swinging drawbar did not extend back far enough to meet the pto specifications for hitching.
