You probably have all the info you need by now. One thing I would check is to pull the starter and look at the "starter drive gears." My H was converted to 12v and the old starter keep for use. Spins it like a savage, I must say. If your starter drive gears are eaten up, you might prevent them from damaging the ring gear by replacing the starter drive. About $40-50 and the replacement is easy. Just make sure and not damage the brushes on the starter. While the starter is off, put the tractor in road gear, with the switch off obviously, and rock the tractor gently forward, making the ring gear move through an entire circle. Note the condition of the ring gear. It will be worn but there should not be any broken or missing teeth. You'll notice at least one point where the teeth are most worn in the circle. This is because the old tractor seems to want to stop in regular patterns of positions on the ring gear, and the next "start" will hammer the starter gears into the ring gear at that point. If your ring gear is damaged, you've got more than a simple problem to solve.
