12v alternator hook-up question H

bought an H (1941) few weeks ago, runs super - haven't done anything to it related to my problem: problem is the prior owner had "just converted to 12v alternator," and I didn't get a chance to ask him if he had noticed any problem. But, the tractor won't charge the battery. It won't charge regardless of how long I operate the engine, or at what speed, and the belt connection is fine. Took the alternator to AutoZone - checks out super, good as new. I am unfamiliar with "positive ground systems, and my H is positive grounded," so question is - "How do you hook up the alternator?" Specifically - where does the line from the "stator" run, and where does the line for the "field" run? It was hooked up with the stator line to the pos term of the battery and the field line to the ignition switch, which doesn't seem right to me because I believe the polarity of this alternator is for the diode to produce a "+" charge, and the frame of the alternator is common with the chassis, which is pos grounded to the battery. The AutoZone guy says the alternator is just grounding all the output for nothing. Starter is pos grounded and hot line from the battery runs through the starter relay switch. Please, I need someone who knows dead on. Thanks, RK Smith
