don't know if you have mag or distributor, but 1st suspect in both is the point set. Then the coil if you have a distributor. You say it finally runs, so it finally gets spark "somewhere," and a coil is a mystery with gremlins inside. Substitute the coil temporarily and see if it cures the problem. Also, are you able to check the factory specs for timing? and timing advance? If so, tell me what you did, and what you set things on? Which cylinder? Where did you set the mark? What's the advance? What rpm for both? If this is all greek, you can have no confidence that the ignition is right. It has to be close enough to right, or you'll never get it running and cranking right by just looking at the plugs, wires, and looking for spark.
