I think it can be done, but you are looking at alot of stress and time mving the bull gear in and out of position to remove and reassemble the axle into the trans housing.. You have to remember that the bull gear is big and heavy.. I persnally would remove the deck, just so I could make all the inspections and keep the stress of the job down..
