Just got in from setting the timing. The pointer is now right before the first mark as it comes toward me. Engine starts right up (admittedly it's warm). I installed new plugs and tuneup kit a couple of weeks ago, double checked the gap after tightening it down so I believe it's right. Thanks for the help.
