Frank, a 3588 is a tractor from the series that IH called 2+2. They are a full-time 4WD tractor that IH made from 1979-1981. They were not designed to be a BIG 4WD. They had about the same HP as the big 2WDs of the era. They were designed for row-crop applications. The cab was mounted on the back half of tractor, so that the front end turned without the operator turning with it. This was thought to provide better visibility while giving the operator better control by having him on the rear half of the tractor. The cab, transmission, rear end were mainly the same as the 86series tractor, which was IHs big 2WD series at the time. The engine(a DT-466 IH) was mounted ahead of the front axle for better weight balance. The weight was split 2/3 front, 1/3 rear so that the weight would transfer equally during a hard pull. The 3588 was 150PTO HP. There were many 2+2s sold here in the US, but the concept never was fully accepted by the industry. When Case bought the IH ag division in 1984/85, the 2+2 was essentially dropped in favor of MFD tractors, which were embraced more openly by the industry. Many lessons were learned with the 2+2 project, some of which I still do not believe the tractor industry fully understands yet.
