Super C generator circuit

I have wired my Super C the same as Bob Melville’s wiring diagram for a Super H. The Super C manual shows the drawing to be correct for either C or H with the exception of the Magneto which doesn’t matter in this case. I haven’t started the tractor yet, but how does this work? It would seem to me that the field of the generator needs exciting for it to produce current out the armature. With no switch to excite the field, is the regulator smart enough to do this automatically (I don’t think so)? If there was voltage applied to the field and the tractor was not running, then it would drain the battery. What up?
