With a moderately low battery, the voltage goes down to about 4.5 volts when starting (the starter draws massive current reducing a low battery's voltage dramatically. The ignition is confronted with insufficient voltage to fire the coil across the plug gap. It won't start. Pulling it allows the battery to put all its attention on the ignition, so it starts immediately. I believe your charging system is not working correctly. See John T in the search for box above to get a very complete charging system analysis to print out. By the way changing to 12v can be an advantage, but you need to understand how first. A six V with nice fat OO gauge cables will start them every time. JimN
