Jon, My 1942 M had one on it when I bought it. It is a Luber-Finer filter. I have not looked too hard to find a replacement filter, but I suppose it filters better and longer than the original. I also bought a few other housings of eBay, one NOS with the original decal, filter, etc. I am toying with the idea of setting up all my M's with them so I can use the same filter in all.
