Don't cut the felt pieces unless you are 200% sure you absolutely HAVE to. The leaky H I'm working on had the rear seal shortened to fit years before I bought it. When I finally got around to rebuilding it, the seal had at least a 1/4 inch gap in it. I had to soak my felts in oil to mash the whole thing in the groove.

The two "pins" sound like the seals for the plate under the rear main bearing. The recess in the block under the rear main bearing is filled with a plate that attaches to the rear seal. The plate-to-block joint is filled by the felt pins.
