Another solution is to jack the Diferential just so there is no pressure on the axle housing, then remove all the bolts and (as you describe move it out a bit and clean all the gasket out. split a new gasket at the top and loop it into place with #2 permatex skimmed onto the gasket on both sides, and a little extra where they come together at the cut.
