Hi Rob, another hint is always hook to the smallest end of the log which is usually towards the top of the tree. Reason smallest end of log will not dig into ground and catch rocks and roots. Be careful with short logs 8ft or less, keep chain hooked about 8 inches from end. If chain is hooked to far from end on a short log and the front of log catches a rock the log will go end over end especially if going down a hill.
Been there down that once. Was lucky log came down on top of tractor tire and bounced over to back of seat and scraped my back.

Best time to skid logs is when ground is frozen with a little snow cover but realize you live in a State where ground never freezes.
