What I have found is the old seals are over twice as thick and if you look inside the old seal there is actually two seals together seperated by a piece of rubber. I like to put two seals back in but I only do that if there isnt any groove cut into the shaft. If theres a groove then you can use one and avoid that groove usually. A piece of pvc pipe the same size as the shaft comes in handy sometimes. I put my seals on where they are "face to face" and the second one is hard to get on without putting it on the pvc pipe first and then sliding it onto the shaft.
