Although they are called water or coolant filters, their primary purpose is not filtering the coolant, but rather to replace the additives in the coolant in a convienent manner as they are used up. The filter material in most filters is actually a screen and does more to insure that the additives are completely dissolved in the coolant before leaving the filter rather than to trap any material already in the coolant. It will not hurt to put it on an old low horse power tractor but it will not do much good either. Better just to regularly replace the coolant every couple of years.
