Red: Looks are only skin deep with these larger tractors especially the diesels. I had one of these new. It went 10,000 hours needing only tires and a hydraulic pump. At 10,000 hours, it still looked like new as it was only 12 years old. Did a complete rebuild from crank pulley to pto shaft, bear in mind this was a professional rebuild done by IH dealer, and the cost was right around $10,000., on a tractor that was bought new for $4,200. In my opinion, one has to really know what to look for in judging such a tractor. In 1979, I could have made my 656 look and sound nice just replacing pump and injectors, however the pto had slipped on ocasion, TA was working but required some work, installed new clutch assembly and flywheel and did the engine. Front end and hitch also required some pin and bushing work. Later my 656 needed a radiator and power steering work, and that was not included in the $10,000. If you happen to find one with all that done, it would be worth a lot more than one needing all that done.
