The ammeter polarity matters as to whether or not is shows charge or discharge, but I just read your old post from January and it seems like you can recognize what it's supposed to be doing. I agree that if the ammeter is pegging out there is a problem. Even with the leads reversed you should only show 2-3 amps (dis)charge. I will defer to Bob M. He is the expert on these things. He walked me through how to do this on my 'A' about five yeas ago and he really knows his stuff. I have a feeling that the rebuild shop's negative ground is polarizing ("training") the generator to produce a negative charge at the 'bat' terminal, but that's just a guess on my part.
