I just went through this myself recently. I did mine the same way, but I learned later there is a better way. If you continue this way, make sure the tractor is in gear and the breaks are locked. I had a pipe wrench the size of yours and two men. I thought we were going to twist it off, but it finally broke loose. The threads are normal, right hand threads. The better way is to take a piece of bar stock, weld it to a big nut and use a big socket and big air wrench. I ruined the nut and they are hard to find - $68.00 at the dealership. I know one case where the owner just used a punch and a hammer and his came off easily.
