H transmision

I picked up an H at a decent price that needs quite a bit of work. My plans are to put a 236 diesel power unit in it. I have everything from the clutch forward pretty much under control for what i need to do. The transmision and posibly the rear end has me scared. There is alot of ice in it, missin some gear teeth in the transmision and makes alot of funny clinking noises when it rolls. I have to split the tractor to put in the motor but do i have to split the rear end and tranny to? Also what is the best way to diagnose and fix these problems?
