#1 is front cylinder.
The issue is that the engine will run correctly and be in time in a number of positions if assembled differently. so the real info (If the dist has not been pulled out) is to turn the engine with #1 spark plug out, and your thumb, or a round end fat stick in the sparkplug hole, until compression pressure blows air out. Then grank further very slowly to get the piston to the vry top. (the timing marks on the front pulley will then align) now you know for sure which is #1 on the Dist cap. JimN
