I had the same problem on a Super H. I fashioned a puller by using a normal gear puller and some chains. Put so much pressure on it I was afraid I would break something. As to painting, I painted the upper and lower bolster separately while off the tractor. As stated below, there is really no reason to pull the gear off unless you need to replace something. Those things do not always come off easily no matter what you do.
