This topic is somewhat complex. The archives here ((search for)) ABOVE, Will have fifty posts pictures and comments. The primary reason is abusive shifting into fifth by operators that rake it past the grinding teeth (actually splines on the input shaft, and fourth fifth slider) with force. The solution may be good NOS gears, Pricy, or good used gears. The Belly pump, and top cover need to be removed but no split is needed. Shifter forks and rails as well as the tip of the shifter should be inspected as well to assure a good repair. Bending shift forks is (usually) a make shift (interesting word use) way of getting a bit more use out of it, but not too correct. JimN
