If you buy a new 12 volt coil, no need for any external ballast. A 12 volt coil will have somewhere aorund 2.5 to 3.5 ohms of primary winding resistance as measured between its lil + and - terminals. It may be labeled "12 Volts" or "12 Volts NOT for use with ballast resistor" NOTE if its labeled " 12 volts for use with ballast resistor" then you need one cuz its in reality a 6 volt coil.

If you change from Pos to Neg ground the coil should be wired - to distributor ya know and the ammeter leads need swapped or it will read bass ackwards.
