Personally, I prefer 15w40 in summer and 5w30 in winter. IH probably originally recommended straight 30 in summer and straight 10 in winter, which will work fine as well. Just make sure to get a good name brand diesel oil. I'm not sure about your 4-cylinder, but the 6-cylinder German diesels hold 12 quarts, so I'd guess 10 for yours.
