Bob: I think you'll find most species have their own distinct aroma in the fire box. I agree some will be rather unique and have a pronounced difference. Try a bit of poplar, you wont win many popularity contests. I used to sell up to 30-40 cord per year off the farm. I had customers that could pick out oak, maple or birch when they entered a house and the wood furnace was on. I can pick out fruit tree wood, poplar and the rest, my only claim. I found the outdoor furnace guys liked the poplar, providing they could buy it for less. It doesn't yield the heat per cord of other hardwoods. Even in the outdoor furnace it fouls the air in the neighborhood.
