You are right the outer seal is for grease in the outer bearing. Dont put but a couple shots of grease at a time to prevent seal damage. The inner seal is harder to replace. The top cover needs to come off, so the bull gear can be removed in order to get to the seal. I don't suppose it would hurt anything if you can get it stopped at the outer seal.
