billonthefarm has it right - they change they increase the suffix when they change the part. Of course, when one part changes, that doesn't mean that the parts interacting with it necessarily change. Additionally, if I remember correctly, when they increase the suffix, they make sure the new part will work in place of the old. So, you should be able to replace an R1 with an R2 if that helps.
