Take the big plug with the hex on it out of the front of the steering box. You'll likely need a big 6 point hex socket of the correct size to get it out. Don't use something that will round off the corners of the hex. Once you get that out, you can turn the steering wheel and screw out the worm. You may have to take the bearing loose at the steering support post near the steering wheel. There is a ball bearing on the end of the steering shaft. If there is any play in it get a new one. There is a castle nut on the end of the shaft that holds the bearing on the shaft. To get rid of the shaft moving in and out as you described, the bearing must not have play, the inner race of the bearing must be clamped tightly against the shoulder on the steering shaft below the worm and when you reassemble, the large plug must clamp the outer race tightly in the steering housing. You may have to add a machine washer of the proper size under the plug to get it to clamp the outer race tightly. Make use the washer contacts only the outer race or it may restrict the bearing from turning. The bearing is cheap, only about $10. If you do this, I don't thing you'll likely need much else. More work on the steering box will require removing the front axle and taking the steering box apart from the bottom.
