Welding the nut on the stud works good if you have some welding skill. The main thing it does is to heat the stud nicely which breaks the bond. If you use 6011 or 6010 it can still be drilled later if are unsuccessful but I have done many and never failed. I did have to weld four on an M manifold stud which came out hard all the way. I think too long of a stud had been bottomed out damaging the threads. You won't damage the block, the worst you will do is eat a little cast iron away right around the hole.
