I would do the cheapest thing first: Warm it up, cut to about 450 rpm, and put a timing light on number 1. See if it is close to TDC, - I don't know what it should be, but probably close to TDC. Then go to full throttle and look for about, say 25-40 degrees of advance. If the timing is severely retarded or advanced, you may have found the problem. Try setting the idle timing about 2-5 degrees before whatever it is supposed to be and see if it helps with power and cooling. Mis-timed engines will overheat under load. A lot of these old tractors may have not been timed accurately since the factory. Setting the points as close as possible on the top of the dist lobe isn't enough sometimes. RKS
