My dad had a 39 h that he gave away! it would slip out of 5th and you would have to hold it in, we just used a bungie cord and that worked for a long time. but it did go out and it would just grind. I know that they used hardened gears until i belive 46 or so. after that they used induction hardened gears and they lasted longer and were better. If you think it is not going in all the way, pop the shifter off and use a big screwdriver and put it into 5th manually. if it does the same thing it is the 4th 5th slider. I had a shifter break and was 5 miles from home so i put it into 5th with a screwdriver and drove it all the way home. I would rather take off in fifth gear and save the gears of if i do use 4th to go into 5th i put a little pressure on the shifter before i put it into 5th because every time you grind the gears it IS doing DAMAGE!
