Except for the '39's and some very early 40's which had the two piece channel/rectangular tube frame seat, all H's and M's had the bent round tube type seat support with the seat having jute padding and dark gray colored canvas covering. This is the seat with the little tool box thing and the vertical coil spring on the mounting bracket. Soon after WWII the Monroe made seats with the tapered coil spring and the shock absorber in the back became available at most IH dealers(and some other color dealers too)as an aftermarket product. In 1948 the Monroe type seat started coming out on production IH H's and M's and they had a foam rubber padded seat with a silver canvas covering and a smaller shock absorber in front of the coil spring. This "nice" seat was not standard really but was a commonly provided option that apparently became standard because of it's general acceptance. The seat was not free to be tipped back over however like the old tube framed seats were, but on the later Super H's and Super MTA's most had the extra flip-over seat frame to allow the seat to be moved back or tipped over. These seats all came with the silver canvas covering....the common white and red vinyl coverings often seen were never a factory option on these seats.
