I seem to remember someone asking about taking play out of McC-D 10-20 steering gear. Don't find the question now, but if the writer is still looking for an answer, here is the "official" word from a now-ancient IHC repair book (1925) I inherited from my father. I can't show the pictures, so will summarize as best I can: Remove the six cap bolts that surround the horizontal steering shaft (coming out the side of the steering box). Turn that casting BACKWARDS the distance of one bolt hole. Put the bolts back in. The book says that this operation can be repeated if further play develops. The original position of the grease fitting is on top, but this will be moved around toward the back. Spent over 10 years on one of these unbreakable old girls. I was going to call it a beast, but that is not fair. The 10-20 came out in 1923, as I remember, and it was fairly comfortable for its day. There was a platform, the seat and steering wheel were pretty well placed, and visibility was good. The ride on steel on gravel roads was absolutely awful, but on sod or previously-plowed ground, it wasn't bad. My recollection of the steering is not of much play, but of a LOT of effort needed to turn the wheel. Much friction between front wheels and ground, I expect.

We thought we could get by with this since the engine ran perfectly and would not need any internal work. After the cleanup and painting was done, we began reassembly and finally came to t
