From what you described it sounds like it may be fuel starvation. Does it still have the sediment bowl? That would be a small glass jar under the gas tank. Is the valve open all the way on the sediment bowl? There may also be some junk inside the gas tank. Also the gas cap may not be the vented type. Next you get a chance take the gas cap off and rap a small rag around the filler neck on the gas tank. Secure it with a rubber band. If that cures what ails it then all you need is a vented gas cap. Sorry to hear about your husband.
