If standing in front of engine and looking to rear of tractor at the pulley measure around circumference of pulley in clockwise dirrection from TDC notch. 1 and 9/32 for 20 degrees, 1 and 11/32 for 25 degrees. That will put you pretty close. If you have or are using a distributor with original advance it will have 40 degrees advance in it if advance is working. If so and you set max advance to 20 by turning distributor I think it will be hard to get engine to idle. Advance and distributors got changed over the years so its hard to say what you have. Some got changed to less maxamum advance when fire crator kits were installed. Think you should work on advance in distributor and limit advance to the max you want unless you want timing to be retarded at low engine RPM.
