Be aware that the magneto rotates counterclockwise(facing the rotor), opposite to what you normally expect. So..you need to connect the plug wires accordingly. Have you checked the points to see that they are properly set?? If you got a shock, I would think the mag only needs some tuning up. Also, the point cam in the mags has only two lobes, so there is gearing between the cam and the rotor. You must have the timing correct so that the rotor points to No. 1 plug wire contact when the No. 1 cylinder is TDC of the compression stroke. Be aware that on the MD, changing to gas side does four things. 1) changes butterflys in the manifold to direct air through the carb. In diesel mode, air does not flow through the carb. 2)Turns the ignition on. That is ungrounds the mag. In diesel mode the mag is grounded to stop the spark. The switch is in a chamber at the front of the manifold. 3)Releases the carb float to allow gas to flow. On the diesel side the float is locked up to stop gas flow. 4)Opens the compression release valves to the spark plug chambers to reduce compression. In diesel mode, the valves are closed. Also, check the plugs to make sure you have the correct long reach Champion D89 plugs. These have a long electrode to facilitate combustion in the chamber that is restricted. They will cost around $8 each. When you have everything right, the MD should start in gas mode with only a turn or two. Mine requires full choke to start and then fiddle with the choke as it warms up. There is no throttle control except by removing the carburator and adjusting a plate inside. Keep us posted.

When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
