Here is a quick check of the system. Put it in neutral. Have a screwdriver in hand. Turn on the Ignition. Stand next to the tractor (Dist side). Pull the big spark carrying wire from the center of the distributor, and position it so that it is 1/4 inch away from the block. Use tape to do this so you don't get shocked. place the screw driver on the nut with the wire attached on the side of the distributor (goes to the coil). Touch the tip to the side of the distributor (shorting the wire and terminal to ground. Then pull it off the nut. A fat spark should jump from the coil wire to the block. A small spark will happen at the screwdriver. If this happens, the points need to be looked at (under the black cover under the rotor). If no spark, then the points may be closed, and need cleaning adjustment. Point gap is .020" with the four lobe cam turned so that it is pushing them open (high point) If this fails to make a spark, the coil may be bad. good luck, JimN

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
