Ya its doable without pulling the top cover, and just pulling the PTO. We did it last year up at school on a couple Hs and Ms. Its less work overall but it is a bit more challengeing. It helps alot to have 3 or 4 pieces of threaded rod that are the same size of the bolts that hold the axle housing. Than when you go to put it back on you can thread those in and slide the axle housing in on them so its not flopping around. Than once it is lined up with the bull gear you can use some nuts to pull the axle in close enough that the axle bolts can start.
