Tom - it really sounds like a bad battery. Full charge just means 12V to full capacity of the battery. However, the capacity of the battery may no longer be able to deliver the amps needed to turn it well, because of a bad cell or two. Try this: check the water level of the battery and charge the battery fully and don't use the charger in the cranking test. Put a voltmeter on the battery, and when you hit the starter I bet it'll drop way under 10V, maybe way under 6 or 5. If so, that's your short term problem, cause even a lower amp battery that is good won't get kicked way down on a start test. If so, get another battery. BTW - pull the starter and look at the starter drive gears. That little move might save you a locked up starter or broken ring gear teeth down the road. I know from experience. I've got a 41 H that was converted before I bought it. The owner didn't complete the job accurately, but the bracket and belt were on ok. Yes, the hood won't close and I'm glad to have another head working on the problem. Too, I have looked for a small profile 12V alternator, however at full belt extension, you only gain "half" of the actual difference in diameter, since the radius difference on the side between the pulley and the valve cover can't be used at full belt extension. And, with a new belt, the smaller alternator would have to reach normal belt tight extension before the case contacts the valve cover or the new belt wouldn't work. It seems to me that a slightly smaller belt and slightly smaller alt case might just work. As for the bracket, if you haven't bought the alternator yet, try looking at a tractor parts shop for a conversion kit, since the bracket on mine looks like it was designed for a "universal" application. I bet a local starter alternator shop will have a bracket, and a local motor repair shop will have belts stacked up til the "world looks level." If not, I bet "63 Alternator Service," a sponsor of YT (contact Sherll) will. Mine works fine for now, and if I ever get really dedicated to solving it, I'll look for some tiny import 12V or some industrial engine 12V application to try and modify. Good luck, let us know if you find one. RKS
