Test for the ammeter function (assuming the ammeter is wired up correctly...): Turn on the ignition or the lights. The ammeter should indicate about -3 amps (ign), or -7 to - 10 amps (lights). If the needle stays on 0, place a small magnet close to the ammeter face and move it around. The gage hand should move one way or the other. If it does not the gage hand is stuck (which happens a lot). Only fix is a new gage. And as the others mention, you can test alternator function with a DC voltmeter across the battery terminals. It should read about 14 - 14.5 volts with the engine running at 1/2 throttle. If the voltmeter shows less than about 13 volts it means the alternator is not working.
